WAUPACA REPUBLICAN February 13, 1885 NEW ROLLER RINK Waupaca will have one on the Grand Scale. The success attending the building and running roller rinks in other places has finally awakened parties to the fact that the enterprise on a larger scale would pay here. On Monday C.P. Ward of this city and C.H. Skallerup of Ogdensburg leased ground of Winfield Scott south of the Episcopal church and let the contract to Royal Green to immediately commence a building for the purpose of roller skating, dancing, etc., an din all probability a stage will eventually be put in and supplied with scenery for entertainments and traveling troupes. The main floor will be 50 x 120 feet. However 20 feet will be taken off the end for a raised platform or stage for spectators in addition to a gallery that will probably be put in. A balcony for the band will also be arranged on one side. The sides of the building will be 16 feet high. The roof will be supported on the truss plan and there will be no posts in the center of the building, on one side of the building will be arranged rooms for office also cloak, dressing and refreshment rooms. It is the intention of the gentleman to have everything fitted up in first class shape and the rink ready for rolling in thirty days. We all know Mr. Ward, while he is full of vim over the enterprise, he can not be here but little to attend to it, but Mr. Skallerup is a wide awake young businessman and will give his entire time to it; besides it is understood a professional skater will also be engaged to assist in running the rink. The Waupaca Cornet Band will also furnish music three evenings weekly. The work of laying the blocks for the foundation has already commenced and soon Waupaca will be up with her sister cities in having the modern rink. We wish Messrs. Ward & Skellerup success in their enterprise. |
