REPUBLICAN POST March 2, 1916 Clarissa Abbie Martin was born in Willoughby, Ohio, Sept. 19, 1841; married to George Suits in early womanhood, they moved to Illinois, where they resided about one year, afterward coming to Baldwin’s Mills, Wis., where they settled on the land now owned by Minot Sheldon. At the time of the Civil War, Mr. Suits enlisted, joining the 8th Wis. Eagle Regt., Co. A, serving for three years. During this time Mrs. Suits stayed at home, caring for their two little children, and doing the farm work. They lived in this home until the death of Mr. Suits and her daughters moved to Marinette where she conducted a drug business for some time. On account of failing health, she removed to Merrill, Wis., in 1903, where she lived with her daughter the remaining years. The deceased had been a sufferer for several years from organic heart trouble, and it was that which caused her sudden demise. The “one last, clear call” came for her early in the morning of Friday, Feb. 18, 1916. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Will Suits, of Maple Grove, two daughters (Phoebe), Mrs. (Dr.) Walsh, and Mrs. Emma Lemeke, both of Merrill, one son, Eugene, having died in early childhood. There are also left seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The deceased was a woman of energy and ambition. Of such were the early pioneers who by ceaseless toil and self-denial hewed down the forests, cleared the land, and won from the soil a substantial competence which has given many pleasant homes to the present generation. Those who knew her recognized her abilities and valued her friendship. She will be lovingly remembered by those to whom she was dear. Funeral services were held at the home of her son-in-law, Dr. Walsh, in Merrill, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, and the remains, accompanied by the immediate relatives, were brought to Maple Grove, where services were held in the M.E. church, Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. A. Hoad, the pastor, conducting the same, assisted by the Rev. W. Wilson of Clintonville. A large number of friends attended to pay tribute to the deceased, and express their sympathy for the bereaved. Interment was in Baldwin’s Mills cemetery, beside the husband and little son.
