THEY GOT OFF EASY

Police Justice Holst Shows Great Leniency to Several Citizens of Waupaca

Sheriff H.R. Furst and Chief of Police A.A. Papineau, assisted by Wm. Taepke and Night Watch David Hazen made a raid Sunday at about midnight on the temperance saloon of Habersaat & Fabricius and caused the arrest of Carrie Faltzbot, Gertrude Wheelock, Grace, DeRose, Earl Farbricius, Evan Lamb and Carl Anderson.

According to the account given by those who participated in the raid, the rear window was opened and the young women were assisted down to the ash pile on the river bank at he first knock of Sheriff Furst at the front door which was locked.  The raid had been planned to guard against such an attempt and Night Watch Hazen was at hand to call a halt to the young women. This proved unnecessary in the case of one of them as a weak spot in the ice gave way and the woman stood in water nearly waist deep.  The pursuers became rescuers and the woman was helped out of the icy waters while the weather was several degrees below zero.  The women were marched off to jail for the night.  Monday morning a complaint was sworn out against all six by Chief of Police Papineau under Chapter 3, section 1, of a city ordinance against disorderly conduct.  All pleaded guilty before Police Justice Peter Holst who pronounced a fine which with costs amounted to $6.00 for each of the women and $8.00 each for the men.

Mr. Anderson has asked us to state that he and Earl Fabricius were passing the place and Earl remarked that he must go in and attend to the fire.  The two went in and found the other four of the party in the building.  While waiting for the fire to start up so it could be left for the night the officers came and arrested the entire party.  He knows now he should have gone right along home instead of stopping and has resolved to avoid all such experiences in the future.
