DOCTOR PLEADS GUILTY

Pays $20 Fine and $4.84 Costs and Promises Not to Issue Prescriptions for Liquor in Future

.District Attorney Giles H. Putnam on the 3rd inst. Swore out a complaint in behalf of the State against Dr. J.B. McNaughton on information and belief that said Dr. J.B. McNaughton did on December 22, 1914, prescribe intoxicating liquors for D.L. Mercer when such prescription was unnecessary for the health of the said D.L. Mercer and did  prescribe a larger quantity of such liquor than was proper for the ailment or disease of said D.L. Mercer, with intent to evade or assist to evade the excise laws of the state of Wisconsin.

Atty. John C. Hart was attorney for defendant and District Attorney Putnam represented the county.

On advice of his attorney, the defendant pleaded “not guilty” and was fined $20 and the costs were assessed at $4.84 which amount was paid and Dr. McNaughton promised in open court to desist from issuing any prescriptions for liquor in future which promise had something to do in mitigating the fine which was imposed by Police Justice Nordvi.

Charge Against Salverson

On Friday, the 5th inst., Chief of Police Friesleben swore out a complaint that on the 24th day of January, 1915, Tom Salverson did unlawfully vend, sell, deal and traffic in and for the purpose of evading the laws of the state, give away certain spirituous, malt, ardent and intoxicating liquors and drinks, without first having obtained a license herefor according to the laws of the state of Wisconsin.

The time set for this case is Tuesday next, Feb. 16, when Dist. Atty. Putnam will be in the city to conduct the prosecution in behalf of the state.

Considerable interest will doubtless be manifested in the case against Salverson as he is the same party that has been prosecuted for alleged selling to minors since his connection with the saloon business at Ogdensburg. However, he was able to secure an acquittal at the hands of a jury of six residents of the county.
