WAUPACA REPUBLICAN September 9, 1909 SOME BORN GREAT, OTHERS IN WEYAUWEGA In a letter to the Oshkosh Northwestern, B.M. Barnes of this city has the following comment on some of his former acquaintances: “I have in mind five men that were reared and educated in Weyauwega that have gained state and national fame such as no other small town in the state can boast of. The men were: W.H. Upham, governor of Wisconsin; John Hick, minister to Chile; W.H. Birdsall, member of congress from Iowa, Lyman Barnes, member of congress from Wisconsin; George D. Meiklejohn, member of congress from Nebraska and assistant secretary of the navy under McKinley. The last three named were born in the village of Weyauwega, receiving a part of their education in the village school.” |
