What Voting $1000 … to Camp Site …
The referendum … whether or not the city of Waupaca will appropriate the sum of $1000 for the improvement of the camp-site and which will be voted on at the election next Tuesday, is receiving a large amount of attention and thought, and will without doubt bring out a big vote.
There seems to be more or less of a misunderstanding as to what the voting of $1000 for this purpose would mean. Some citizens are of the impression that if the $1000 is voted the camp-site would become a paid camp-site, while others are of the impression that the $1000 would be used for the purpose of taking care of the camp-site this coming summer only.
These are both mistaken ideas. The question of whether or not Waupaca will have a paid camp-site does not enter into the referendum at all – that being a matter that is to be decided by the city council.
The $1000, if it is voted, will be used in the making of permanent improvements at the camp-site, - improvements that will not only beautify but greatly increase the facilities the camp-site now has to offer.
All citizens of Waupaca recognize the value of the tourist trade that visits Waupaca and the Chain o’ Lakes during the summer. The money that is left here by these same tourists is almost beyond belief. A conservative estimate has placed the amount of money left in Waupaca, by people who visit the lakes, at $70,0000.00 during a season. [transcriber note: the amount is as shown in the paper)
While the amount of money spent in Waupaca by visitors at the camp-site is far from any sum like this; it is a large amount. It is estimated that each car visiting the camp-site will leave from $10 to $15 in the city, so it can be readily seen that during the summer months the total amount becomes a large one.
Waupaca is a beautiful resort city. It is bidding more strongly each year for tourist visitors and tourist trade. Increased camp-site facilities will be instrumental in bringing more visitors of this kind.
