SECOND SENATORIAL DISTRICT

Democratic Convention

The Democrats of the second senatorial district met in convention at Weyauwega, on the 24th day of August, 1855, in accordance with the call of the District Committee, for the purpose of appointing two delegates to the democratic State Convention, and also to nominate a democratic candidate for Senator.

On motion of Abraham Brawley the convention preceded to chose David Scott, of Waupaca, as Chairman, and Geo. R. Walbridge Secretary of this convention.

On motion, a committee of three was appointed by chair to examine the credentials of the delegates.

After a recess of a few minutes the committee reported the following gentlemen as entitled to seats in this convention:

Waupaca County – David Scott, J.E. Thayer, B.F. Brown, W.C. Lord, M.P. Judson, W.C. Carr, Maurice Herron, N.N. Pope, Thos. Knapp.

Portage County – Abraham Brawley, S.L. Carpenter, Geo. R. Walbridge, G.M.L. Park, Geo. W. Morrill, B.L. Sharpstein, L.P. Powers, Wm. Wigginston, and Miner Strope.

Marathon County – Henry Cate (five votes.)

On motion, the convention proceeded to cast an informal ballot for Senator. The chair appointed B.F. Brown and Geo. R. Walbridge as Tellers.

On motion of B.L. Sharpstein, the Hon. Morgan L. Martin was unanimously declared the nominee of this convention.

On motion, the convention then proceeded to vote by formal ballot for two delegates to attend the democratic State Convention at Madison

Messrs. B.L. Sharpstein and S.L. Carpenter having received the highest No. of votes cast, were declared the appointed delegates of this convention.

On motion of B.L. Sharpstein, the convention proceeded to nominate a corresponding committee consisting of Messrs. David Scott, Abraham Brawley, A.G. Ellis, G.W. Cate, Geo. R. Walbridge, and J.E. Thayer, and requested them to inform the Hon. Morgan L. Martin of his nomination, offer him the hearty support of the democrats of this district, and assuring him of their utmost exertions to secure his election.

On motion of S.L. Carpenter, Messrs. G.M.L. Park, J.E. Thayer, and B.L. Sharpstein were appointed a Committee to draft resolutions expressing the sentiments of this Convention.

On motion, the following gentlemen were appointed as the Democratic Senatorial Committee for the ensuing year:

The Committee appointed to draft Resolutions submitted the following to the Convention, which were unanimously adopted.

Resolved, That in presenting the name of Morgan L. Martin to the Democracy of the second Senatorial District, as a candidate for the State Senate, we present a man who has long been tried in the public service of his country, and never, either in ability or true democratic principles, has yet been found wanting.

Resolved, That we truly pledge ourselves to use all honorable means that may be presented to ensure the election of Morgan L. martin as State Senator of this Senatorial District.

Resolved, That we still behold in the Democratic Party those principles and measures drawn from the Jeffersonian School of Democracy – the faithful administration of which have always ensured success to the nation abroad, and prosperity at home under all circumstances.

On motion, all the democratic papers in this District, and the Oshkosh Courier and Menasha Advocate were requested to publish the proceedings of this Convention.

On motion, this Convention adjourned sien die.
