Special Correspondence of the Northwestern.

WAUPACA, Nov. 7. – Returns are all in from the different towns in this county, and Gabe Bouck has 48 majority over Kimball.  This was owing to the unwise and unpardonable course of E.L. Browne and his friends.  Beaten in the Oshkosh convention, instead of gracefully accepting the result, Mr. Browne, like a bear with a sore head, refused to be comforted, and since that has labored in the interests of Bouck and the Democracy.  His best friends here sincerely regret that Mr. Browne should thus sacrifice all his hopes of future success, and place himself on record in such an unenviable light.

The contest for Member of Assembly between Dr. Calkins and H.C. Mumbrue, is very close, but Calkins is elected by from 10 to 15 votes.  Mumbrue is a chronic bolter.

For Sheriff, the people have chosen Selah Cornwell, of Weyauwega, a Republican but a candidate on the “Reform” ticket. Cornwall, personally is a very clever and popular man and the fact that his opponent Gardinier, was a bolter four years since will ameliorate any regret which may exist in the minds of the faithful over the defeat of the regular nominee.

Poetic justice has been exemplified in the result on District Attorney. The Reformers had re-nominated O.F. Weed, of New London, an unscrupulous pettifogger who bolted Kimball’s nomination because Browne was beaten, while the Republicans put up F.F. Wheeler, of Waupaca, a young sprig who has never had a case in his life.  Wheeler is Browne’s brother-in-law, and, although Weed, to please Browne, had bolted Kimball, Browne worked against Weed and succeeded in electing young Wheeler by over 400 majority.

WAUPACA COUNTY

A few days since, a communication from Waupaca was published in the NORTHWESTERN, from a prominent gentleman of that village.  In the Daily a portion of the communication was cut off by the carelessness of the printer, and “made up” in the editorial column.  It was published as a whole in the Weekly.  This article purported to state some fact in relation to the late election in that county, for the truth or falsity of which our correspondent is alone responsible.  Judging from the result in the county, almost anything might be believed as an explanation.

But it seems that our correspondent made some errors; either clerical or otherwise, as we are informed by O.F. Weed, Esq., the Republican and not the Reform candidate for District Attorney, as stated, who writes us on the subject:  Mr. Weed states that Mr. Browne did not bolt his nomination as charged, and that he himself did support Mr. Kimball in the canvass; all of which we are bound to believe, since we have known Mr. Weed for years, and have the most implicit confidence in his word.

We say this much to correct an erroneous impression, and to give the parties named the benefit of their own explanation.  We regret the division in the Republican ranks in Waupaca county, which resulted in the defeat of a portion of their ticket, and which caused so much rejoicing in the ranks of the enemy.  We hope the gaps will be closed up before the next election and that Waupaca will again stand where she belongs – as the banner county in the district.
