FREMONT, June 8th, 1868
Went to Waupaca the other day. Saw lots of people in Waupaca. Great place that. Tearing down old houses and building new ones (wouldn’t be apt to build old ones, eh?). Was at Waupaca four weeks ago. Saw them drawing an old building along the street. Asked citizen what that was for, citizen said to make room for new ones. Hadn’t room enough in Waupaca. Asked citizen where old building was going, citizen said to Weyauwega or Fremont, slightly sarcastic that cit! Couldn’t see new building then.
Went to Waupaca last Monday, saw new building, Waupaca is bound to be somebody yet. Don’t take long to put up new buildings there. Best place to invest capital in Wisconsin – except Oshkosh and --- Fremont!
Saw Capt. S. ‘long S.’ climbed up and shook hands with him. Good fellow, that S. ought to be sent to --- Congress! Don’t wish him any ill, though. Saw Hon. E.L.B. (EL Browne), shook hands with him, too. He ought to go to Congress --- or be sent back to the Senate! Good enough for him, he deserves it. Saw the venerable Capt. P. of the Criterion. Another good fellow, stooped a little, and shook hands with him. “L.J.” didn’t’ seem proud if he has just been and got married!
Saw lots of men with titles. Every man in Waupaca has a title, except one old woman, and her son has three titles. Went into the Court House, looked at the Calander, every case on docket had a title. Great place that Waupaca for titles. Greatest in Wisconsin --- except Oshkosh and Fremont!
Saw Col. E. there, ‘local’ of the Times; shook hand with him, too. Glad to see him hearty, and looking so well, if he is a Democrat! Told me he wasn’t a copperhead. Believe him. Too good a war record for that. Hope he wont’ help the Cops, then. Some one asked him if he came from Oshkosh with the “Angel Gabriel”. “Some one smiled.” E. smiled too, couldn’t tell what pleased them. Bob said he could --- in a horn --- “smiled louder.”
Got hungry. Went to Putnam’s. Every body goes to Putnam’s. Saw the Major – Major very polite. Began to think the Major didn’t recognize me! Soon found it was natural. Major can’t be any other way towards his guests. --- Like to be the Major’s guest. First rate house, that Putnam’s. (Don’t owe the Major anything. Pay all my bills there.)
Saw lots of pretty women there. Wanted to be a young man very muchly! Best looking women in Waupacca, of any place in Wisconsin --- except Oshkosh and Fremont. J.W.
